Davidisms: Give It the Test of Time

My dad was one of the wisest men I’ve ever known. So many of his teachings guided my decision-making growing up. And they still do today.

Here’s a great one: Give it the test of time.

My dad spoke these words to me most often in my youth when I was in dating relationships. He knew that over time, a person’s true personality comes out. Anyone can hide character flaws for days or weeks. Even months. But the more time that goes by, the more one’s true character is revealed.

A few examples. A woman once told me that if her date took her to a restaurant, she would always watch how he talked to a waiter or waitress. To see if he became short. Irritable. Harsh.

She said watching his treatment of others gave her hints and clues as to how he would later treat her. Another friend joked that she watched how he treated her pets. She loved her pets. If he didn’t, no thanks! It was a red flag.

There is a time and season for everything under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1-11). Even a dating relationship. Give it the test of time.

Over time, you’ll pick up hints regarding who a person really is.
