“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).

Stay ready, and you don’t have to get ready.

This is true in every area of life. For athletes. Soldiers. Workers.

Last minute preparation is hard, difficult, and rarely successful. It’s also often a surefire way to fail.

This is especially true for followers of Jesus.

Every day we are to live in Jesus’s presence. To be filled with his Holy Spirit. To remain in an irrevocable union relationship with him. Abiding in him. Resting in him. Knowing that he forever lives in us.

But it’s especially true in waiting for Jesus’s Second Coming. He will return. He promised to do so (Matthew 24:14). It’s an undeniable promise and reality in God’s Word.

If Jesus returns at this moment, would he find you ready? Excited at his return? Serving as he would wish you were? Sharing his gospel with others as he commands you to do?

For if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.

And if you have to get ready for his Second Coming, you’re probably not ready.

And will get left behind.
