This is a valuable leadership lesson I learned from Coach Smith: Choose what’s best for the team. Every organization is made up of a team of individuals. In order to be successful, these individuals must learn how to submit their abilities and interests for the sake of the team. Or said another way, for the greater good. Unfortunately, because of our fleshly desires, the motives of many individuals evolve into personal ambition. Self over team. Me over we. And when this personal quest begins, evil is invited in. And disorder abounds (James 3:13). The team must be valued more highly than the individuals who comprise it. Teams win games. Individual players do not. If you oversee a team, strive to instill this value into everyone. Help individuals learn that when serving one another, there is great strength (Phil. 2:2-4). And eventual victory. It’s why we must always choose what’s best for the team.
