This is a truth I’ve learned throughout my 40+ years in ministry: Hurt people hurt people. People who hurt others have the most hurt in their own hearts. They’ve never dealt with the root of bitterness that defiles many (Heb. 12:15). And often, it’s the people we’re surrounded by - those who we most love - that end up bearing the brunt of our bitterness. We must rid ourselves of bitterness. Refuse to spread poison into the hearts of others. Stop the pain. Here’s how: First, go before the Lord! Ask him to show you why you are hurting. Who may have hurt you. Identify your pain. Then, forgive. Let God’s eternal grace wash over your hurting soul. Have inner healing that reflects outwardly to others. Evidenced by the newfound grace you extend to others. Get in touch with your own hurts and pain. See a specialist if necessary. Do the hard work of healing. And watch your friends and family want to be with you again. Because you’re no longer hurting in your own heart. For it’s hurt people who hurt people.
