As human beings living in a fallen world, one thing is for sure. We will be hurt by others. Experiencing hurt is an inevitable part of the human experience.

When we are hurt by another, we often ask ourselves, “Why would that person do this to me?”

The answer is generally found in some hurt in their own hearts that remains unresolved. A hurt that has lingered within them for years. Wounded, festered and worsened.

Hurt people hurt people.

Therefore, practice empathy. "Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind" (1 Peter 3:8). Jump inside their skin. Walk in their shoes. Try to understand what they’ve gone through.

They could be projecting their pain on you. Which, if so, allows you to practice empathy. Compassion.

And allows you to be Jesus to them in their hurt. As he ministered to you in your hurt.
