There’s an old adage that expresses this truth: “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

Did you know the Word of God says the same thing?

Proverbs 17:17 tells us that a true friend “is born for adversity.”

Though said in different ways, both teachings agree: A true friend will always stand by your side.

I’m not immune to hardship - none of us are. When I have walked through difficulties in my life, there are two especially hurtful things I’ve experienced.

The first is the words of enemies. Those who add insult to injury, seemingly intent to further the pain of another.

But the second one may be even worse - the silence of supposed “friends.”

You find out whether or not a “friend” is a true friend if they stand by your side during hardships and pain. On the other hand, fair-weather friends are silent about your plight. They don’t speak out or stand up for you. They act as if nothing happened.

But when a friend speaks up for you - especially when you are wrongly accused - you have a friend for life. A true friend indeed.

Build your life into these friends. True friends. They are worthy of your time and energy.

Because a true friend will always stand by your side - especially in adversity.
