God gives the best to those who leave the choice to him.

Consider the story of Abraham and Lot. Their herdsmen were in constant strife with one another (Genesis 13). The land wasn’t big enough for both of their herds. So wise Abraham goes to Lot and allows him to decide which land he wants. Abraham probably knew that where there is strife, there is every evil thing (James 3:16).

What does Lot choose? What is best for Lot.

Lot chooses the land in the Jordan River valley, lush with water and green grass. But it’s also the land closest to Sodom, a city filled with wickedness and perversion. As time goes by, Lot and his family move closer and closer to Sodom and eventually Lot arrives at its gates, symbolizing he was a judge and leader in this deplorable town (Genesis 19:1). We later see how Sodom’s godless influence was imbibed by Lot’s daughters.

On the other hand, Abraham let God choose for him. As a result, God gave him the Promised Land for as far as he could see and walk. It was a better land, a land where he raised his son and family. And through Abraham, his family, and his descendants living on that land, the entire world has been blessed (Genesis 12:3).

When making decisions, let God lead you. Crucify your desire for what seems best in the world’s sight. Let God lead you to make your choices for you.

When you do, God will always give you what is the best.
