Have you noticed that people are fickle? We’re able to change our minds at any time. From one moment to the next.

Just ask any politician. A faltering athlete. A coach whose team had a losing season.

It’s why Christ-followers are called to play to an audience of one. One. The Creator of the universe. The Author and Perfector of our faith.

It’s a surefire way to defeat people-pleasing. The opinions of others no longer matter. Whether or not others “like” us is largely unimportant. With no bearing on our lives. Inconsequential.

Seek God’s applause alone. The applause of people is volatile. “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt. 10:28).

God alone has all authority and power. People only have as much power over us as we give them.

Play to an audience of one. People’s opinions about you may change. God’s never will. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

When this reality is deeply embedded in your heart, you’ll be finally free from the bondage of people-pleasing.
