Davidisms - Remembering Howard - Not Everything That Weighs You Down Is Yours to Carry

My big brother Howard was the consummate encourager. Whenever I was going through a hard time, Howard would call and remind me that it was God’s burden to carry. Not mine. Then he would say, “Not everything that weighs you down is yours to carry.” Scripture teaches us to cast all our cares on Jesus because he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). The proof that Jesus cares? The cradle and the cross. These bookends of Jesus’s life on earth testify to the magnitude of his care for us. The King of the universe left heaven and entered the squalor of this earth. Then died an excruciating and humiliating death. Why? Because of his love for us. That’s how much Jesus cares for us. Don’t bear burdens that were never yours to carry! Give them to God. Let him carry them. And if you practice this truth today, I would imagine that you can hear Howard encouraging you from heaven. Just like he always encouraged me.
