My Personal God: My Song

by David Chadwick
The Lord wants to be your “song” (Psalm 118:14). Today, we are going to learn why King David referred to God as his personal song!
Throughout Scripture, God’s people are commanded to sing. Singing was God’s idea. It’s a powerful way to declare our love for our Father and express our faith in him.
As we sing, God soothes our soul and we are able to say that we trust Him in all things.
David knew God personally as his song. Most of the psalms were written by David and were meant to be sung by God’s people. Throughout David’s life, he obeyed the biblical command to sing. He glorified and exalted God by singing about Him and to Him.
As David continually sang praise to the Lord for all that God had done in his life, his faith grew. The same holds true for us. As we sing songs to God, our anxiety diminishes, our hearts calm, our souls are soothed, and our minds are encouraged.
Today, if you feel down, sing a song to God. Sing about his character, his goodness, and his faithfulness to you. Sing especially Bible verses put to song. They not only lift your heart, but you memorize God’s Word in the process.
The eternal God of the universe wants to be your close, personal friend. He longs to show himself as your refuge, your fortress, your strength… and your song.
God loves to hear your song. He loves to hear your voice singing this song. And if you don’t have a good voice? Make a joyful noise with your song. God doesn’t care.
Exodus 15:2 says, “The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”
Remind yourself today, “God, you are my song. You are the one to whom I sing. You are the giver of life, joy, and exaltation! Help me to be obedient in my pursuit of worship!”
