Presence, not presents. Note the spelling. Christmas is much more about God’s presence with us than presents we give to others, especially our kids. One name of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel is Immanuel - God with us (Isa. 7:14). He is the very essence of God, who came to earth for two life-altering reasons. The Incarnation is the story of Jesus leaving heaven and coming to this earth. But there’s more: the cradle must be connected to the cross. Jesus died to forgive us of our sins. But there’s still more. When you confess your sins and ask Jesus to live in your heart, he does so! He enters. He resides there. He takes up your body to be his dwelling place. He talks to you (John 10:27). He leads you as a good Shepherd. And he promises to be with you until the final day of the world’s existence (Matt. 20:28). Christmas is about God’s promise that he not only is with us but lives in us. Forever. Pretty incredible when you think about it, isn’t it? Therefore, always remember this truth: Christmas is much more about Jesus’s presence than it is about giving presents.
